the persistence of memory

i don't really have time to post since i should be going to work, but this but i've been thinking about it for a while. i think salvador dali was a visual genius, in some senses. i have been thinking about time and how we experience it. and the only description of how i feel on the subject is seen by his painting, "the persistence of memory," (shown here):

this is a visual representation of how i think people really experience time. not in a linear fashion, at all, like the clocks we're so accustomed to checking would show us, but in a liquid state of ebb and flow. for example, today is the first day of my third trimester. some times i think, "holy smokes! i only have three months until i get to meet my baby! that's like tomorrow!" and other days each day and even each hour seems to drag on like eternity. i don't think my little pregnancy ticker on the side of my blog helps the time go by quickly, either! it just goes on and on, ticking by the days and hours and minutes. stupid ticker... but i digress.

today i went to the chiropractor and i was talking to a woman there who asked how far along i am. when i told her she said, "the time will fly by. enjoy every minute of it." she said she just turned 40 and has a 15 year old daughter and it seems like the time has passed by in the blink of an eye. and i believe her! she seemed almost desperate to make me see time how she did so i would live life to its fullest and make the most of every moment. i looked her in the eyes and told her that i would enjoy every minute of it.

time is a crazy phenomenon. in the scriptures it talks about "the Lord's time" versus our time. in 2 peter 3:8 it says "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." so it seems to me that there is something eternal about this melting of time. i don't know what it is and i have a feeling in won't be uncovering any eternal secrets of time any time soon. but it gives me something to ponder about while i seize the day and enjoy every moment of it.

what does the painting say to you?
